Was Abdullah's Popularity & Strength Tested

Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was sworn in and took office as the Prime Minister of Malaysia in front of DYMM Yang Di per Tuan Agong Tengku Mizan, Malaysia’s Constitutional Head of State for a second term despite echoes from his predecessor Tun Dr. Mahathir and growing UMNO grassroots that he tenders his resignation before he was given a showdown. However, he reiterated by saying “I fear no one but the Al-Mighty!”

Going by the abovementioned statement; I am of the opinion that he was so obsessed with the Premiership post that he has lost his sense of purpose and directions. Further, I wonder whether at this point of material time, he’d realized what his mistakes that cost him this cathestrophy election results were!

To begin with, Abdullah was handpicked by Tun Dr. Mahathir to administer this country, not elected to office from party elections. Secondly, he had once left UMNO in 1990, together with then Semangat 46 chief Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah ( photo together above with Mahathir ) but made a dramatic turnaround just in time to be in Mahathir’s favor. Henceforth, we can conclude that his popularity within UMNO thus far was actually the respect & trust UMNO members have on Mahathir’s vision & mission. In laymen’s term, they gave face to Mahathir for choosing his successor rather than going to the poll within UMNO which might have caused disunity.

May Abdullah be reminded again that democracy means by the people for the people and once you’d failed to gather sufficient support required by tradition; you had better make way for others.

There is a Chinese proverb that says “If I had known what would have happen now, I wouldn’t have done what I did.” How true!!!

The very first mistake after taking office late 2003 was that he tried to move away from Mahathir’s legacy, by building his own popularity and personality – Cemerlang-Gembilang-Terbilang!

Next he sidelined Mahathir from his administration, most probably with advice from his son-in-law Khairy Jamaluddin – a political science graduate from Oxford University only. Ever since that instant, it was alleged that he took no advice from no one but Khairy, to the much annoyance of those supporters around him.

His popularity dampened further when he publicly told Tun Dr. Mahathir off in several occasions when the later tried to offer some advice pertaining to his decision makings. When they finally faced each other for a seemingly heart to heart talk in reconciliation; Abdullah pretended to listen by taking notes on Mahathir’s grievances and that was all he did. How rude and disrespectful of Abdullah to his predecessor in Mahathir!

From that very instant on, Mahathir, being a veteran in Chinese Sun-zu Art of War, began plotting his downfall. The pinnacle of the whole saga was when Mahathir told publicly just before this election that Abdullah was only a one term Premier before his Deputy Dato Seri Najib took over, inch perfect timing. That was all it takes to split up the UMNO that was once his stronghold when facing elections; so much so that UMNO alone could rule Malaysia with 2/3 majority.

Amidst the campaigning, an “accidental” video clip from Youtube purportedly displaying Mahathir to have said Anwar was in fact innocent in 1998, where his arrest then was a political plot to punish Anwar, which was all. All Mahathir said was he was misquoted and this video clips must have been tampered with, that was all ( without follow up legal processing ) how strange!

Although this “untimely” video clip did not tee down Abdullah but Mahathir himself, however it did wonders in gaining sympathy votes to Anwar and the rest is history.

To Tun Dr. Mahathir, my enemy’s enemy is my friend! Now another wave of discontent from UMNO’s grassroots have began to surface with Mahathir’s son, Datuk Mukhriz fresh from his victory from the Kedah’s Jerlun parliament seat, where the state fell to opposition PAS, voicing Premier Abdullah to “ do the right thing – resign” as the result of this disastrous outing.

Many political observers said although DPM Najib still pledged his unequivocal support and loyalty to Adbullah’s leadership, it is just a matter time Abdullah had to make way for Najib, or some other dark horse like Tengku Razaleigh, whom many considered were amongst those UMNO heavyweights that could have salvage UMNO from the doldrums. Last but not least, not forgetting an unprecedented political comeback in Tun Dr. Mahathir with one of his favorite quote “to right the wrong” and we shall see…………………….for in politics, anything is possible!!!
